This is the first novel by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay I read. Set in 1941, the novel explores the sub-tale (upokatha in Bengali. Interesting to note that the author chooses to call this a sub-tale and not a tale/story, in tandem with the civilized world’s disinterest with the “other world”). The story starts with the villagers’ or residents’ worry about a strange particularly loud whistling in the forest every night. Some thought it must be the restless spirit of “babathakur” (Godfa [...]

This novel reminded me of 'Things Fall Apart' in many ways. It has a similar conflict between tradition and changing times, between superstition and scientific advancements. The conflict here is not brought about by the colonial rule solely but also due to the Second World War. It is the chain of events set forth by this that finally obliterates the 'Bansbadi' village in 'Hansuli' Bend, aided additionally by the great flood of 1943. The 'Kahars' of Bansbadi are literally children of the soil, si [...]

If someone said that Hansuli Banker Upokotha is another tale of ordinary human beings then it probably wouldn't be proper, because this is a story of human beings less than ordinary, at least in this social system. I wonder how someone like Tarashankar could write a novel like this. The life of the 'kaharas' is not something we can truly understand, we are not supposed to. But the little amount we can touch is enough to love this amazing work.
